Commonly Used
Seed Bead Terms:
Rocaille:
The term "rocaille" (pronounced "roh-kai") originally described a
round, silver-lined seed bead with a square hole, but today the term
covers all round seed beads with either a round or a square hole.
Frequently rocaille seed beads are not perfectly uniform, which adds
to their interest and appeal.
Delicas (Made by Miyuki of Japan): These beads are
precision-made, perfectly cylindrical size 11/0 seed beads that look
like tiny rectangular tiles when woven in a pattern. They have a
relatively large hole for their size, which makes them light,
yielding more beads per gram. These features make Delicas ideal for
weaving projects.
Bugle beads:
These beads are longer, tube-shaped seed beads that come in many
sizes. They are sometimes faceted.
Czech Seed
Beads:
The main
producer of Czech seed and bugle beads is the Ornela company.
Sizes range from the tiny size 15/0 to size 1/0 and larger.
Czech seed beads often come strung on hanks, making them easier to
thread onto a needle.
Charlotte:
These beads have one cut (sometimes more) on each bead
which means they twinkle when they catch the light. Traditionally,
charlotte-cut meant size 13/0, but as they are now available in
sizes 8/0 to 15/0, the term gets used more generally.

These beads
are cut or faceted in two places, creating a more reflective
surface.

cut:
These beads
have
three sides that are cut or
faceted, creating the most reflective surface.
Triangle:
These beads are
a
three-sided bead, creating a triangular seed bead when viewed from
top down through the hole.
Hexagon:
These beads
have
six-sides or facets.
Magatma: These beads are a teardrop-shaped.
Matsuno Seed
Beads: Manufactured by Matsuno of Japan, these beads are
an increasingly
popular brand
of seed beads, perhaps because they are less expensive than Toho or
Miyuki beads. In shape, they mimic Delicas, but are not as
regular and the holes are not as large.
Miyuki Seed
Beads:
These beads, manufactured
by Miyuki Shoji in Japan, and known for their high quality.
Miyuki
produces seed beads, bugle beads, Delicas and other shaped beads
such as cubes and triangles. In shape, Miyuki seed beads are
somewhere between cylinder and doughnut and more regular than
Matsuno seed beads.
Toho Seed
Beads: Toho of Japan produces a range of seed bead sizes
and shapes as well as their equivalent to Delicas, Toho Treasures.
They also now produce an even more regular cylinder bead called Aiko
as well as some Charlotte-cut and 3-cut beads. |

once these beads are gone, there is no guarantee that more of the
same will ever be found. To clarify,
vintage as it is used on this page is defined as any bead from 80 to
20 years old. Antique is defined as any bead older than
80 years .
